NATIONAL PARKS & WILDLIFE SERVICE NSW

Regional NSW

TOURISM MARKET SOUNDING

THE BRIEF

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is part of Department of Planning, Industry and Environment. NPWS manages more than 870 NSW national parks and reserves, covering over 7 million hectares of land. It manages 9% of all NSW land, committed to conservation of the state’s biodiversity and cultural heritage.

In 2019 NPWS commissioned Mayvin Global to assist with their regional development strategies for two coastal regions.

Managed as individual projects, the NPWS brief for each project was similar. To provide data-led input into their business cases, for long-term commercial and community tourism product development strategies for:

  • Tomaree Coastal Walk: identify tourist sector interest in a new walking trail in Port Stephens; and

  • Tweed and Byron Hinterland Trail:  identify the tourism sector interest for a proposed walking trail, that has potential to be a world class experience.

THE OUTCOME

In each case, the recommendations were mapped to identify their impact against:

  • Strategic objectives for the region on three timeframes (short, medium, and long-term)

  • Cultural, community and commercial success factors

  • International best practices for their tourism product type

NPWS is using data from these reports within its five and ten-year strategic plans.

“Mayvin Global were professional, strong communicators, understood and managed the response to the brief well and engaged with multiple stakeholders in a professional, timely and reliable manner.

They provided regular (fortnightly) updates on the progress of the project and raised concerns such as timing or feedback they thought NPWS should be aware of, in a timely manner.”
